6 secrets to a functional laundry design, revealed!

Laundries are often overlooked even though they’re one of the most functional parts of a home. When it comes to redesigning your laundry, it can be tempting to gloss over the design and just get the job done, but if you do, you might end up with a laundry which doesn’t function effectively.

Here are our designer-approved tips to achieving a functional laundry space you’ll actually want to spend time in.

Plan for the future

Consider your lifestyle. Do you work full-time, and your task flow is about to pick up speed? Then you might want to include a clothes dryer to save time. Or maybe you’re planning on growing your family, and two washing machines might be necessary. It’s best to prepare for these things in advance before finalising your design.

It’s all about location

Ideally, you should plan for your laundry to flow directly from the kitchen, or else in a services area away from the bedrooms and living space. If you don’t have the luxury of a dedicated laundry room, consider integrating a European laundry in the bathroom or kitchen — or tucked away off the hallway.

Storage, storage, storage

There are obvious storage solutions, such as cupboards and benchtops, but there are other ways you can maximise your storage. Think about installing pull-out laundry hampers, hanging rails in free overhead space, and floating shelves.

TIP: Simply stacking your dryer on top of the washing machine is a smart space saver in your design.

Choose the right sink

The right sink can make a world of difference to your laundry space. Select a deep stainless-steel washing sink to ensure you have enough room to hand-wash delicates and fill the mop bucket. Just make sure you don’t choose one so big that it takes up valuable bench space.

Don’t forget about the ironing

Installing a wall-mounted ironing board is an excellent option for ease of access. Even better, leave a small section of your laundry for a built-in ironing station with concealed storage space for pegs, lint brushes, cleaning sprays and gadgets to minimise time spent double-handling your clothes.

The laundry might be a hated area of the home, but its design is as important as any other. If you’re interested in alternative options in laundry renovation, call 1300 662 838 to speak to one of our smarterBATHROOMS+ experts today.
