Client Brief
This inner-city Melbourne apartment kitchen was ready for a complete transformation. The original space felt dated and no longer aligned with the home’s modern, carefully considered aesthetic. The vision was clear: a high-quality, functional kitchen with a clean, contemporary feel and a focus on thoughtful design details. Clear communication and a collaborative approach with our client, also a Designer, throughout the project ensured the result met the brief without compromise.

Palette
The design called for rich tones and a refined material palette to create a look that felt both timeless and modern. The final selection included black satin KitKat tiles for the splashback, a striking marble island benchtop, walnut timber veneer cabinetry, and bold black fixtures—each element working in harmony to elevate the space.

Function
Functionality was a key focus. Smart storage solutions were integrated into the design to keep the look streamlined while ensuring usability. The fridge, pantry, and internal drawer sets were built into seamless cabinetry, while key appliances—including the oven, microwave, and a concealed euro laundry—were tucked behind pocket doors for a clean, uninterrupted finish.

A standout feature of the kitchen is the BLUM REVEGO UNO pocket door system, which allows large doors to retract smoothly and remain hidden when open. Its installation required meticulous precision, adding to the technical complexity of the build.

Sound control and zoning were also prioritised to accommodate a home workspace nearby. Solid materials, soft-close mechanisms, and acoustic detailing helped achieve a quieter, more efficient environment. The cooking zone now includes a flush-mounted induction cooktop with integrated ventilation, and custom drawers were fitted with internal organisers for maximum efficiency and ease of use.

Challenges & Solutions
Working within the apartment’s structural constraints and limited space presented several challenges. Precision was critical, especially in fitting custom cabinetry and integrated appliances.

The installation of the REVEGO UNO system required a high level of coordination, including supplier collaboration and team training to ensure a flawless result. Mid-project, a change to the lighting layout was requested, and the team responded by reworking plans with the electrician and cabinetmakers to integrate recessed LED strip lighting—enhancing both function and ambience. Soft-close cabinetry, acoustic materials, and rubber dampeners were used throughout to reduce disruption and enhance day-to-day comfort.

Result
The finished kitchen is a sleek, elegant space that blends modern functionality with refined design. Despite the technical challenges, the outcome is a sophisticated, tailored kitchen that integrates seamlessly into the apartment’s overall style—proof that high performance and great design can go hand in hand.
