How to make the most of a small kitchen

If you have hundreds of great ideas for your kitchen but no space to execute them, you may be feeling defeated – but don’t hang up your apron just yet. We’ve put together a recipe for transforming your little kitchen into a beautiful, well-designed masterpiece involving five simple ingredients.

Use your imagination

The first step to realising your dream kitchen is imagining it. This is where all those Pinterest boards, magazine snippets and daydreaming sessions will come in handy. Whether you love clean and white minimalism with strong lines and statement tapware, or a more down to earth theme with luxurious stone elements, develop your concept thoroughly and have a clear mental picture of what you are setting out to achieve.

Sort and store

To straighten out your kitchen, you will need to relocate all items that you’ve collected over the years that are unused, unnecessary or downright unattractive, to the bin.

There’s no doubt that some good quality storage containers can make a huge difference in small kitchens. Add extra space to your pantry (and keep out unwanted pests) by neatly storing pantry items in Tupperware containers. Not only does Tupperware allow you to stack items, leaving you with more storage space, it’s also a great way to organise and easily see your pantry items. But, before you go out and spend big, consider booking a free in-home consultation with one of our award-winning designers. If you book before October 15th, you will receive $1,000 worth of Tupperware – for free!

Prioritise the essentials

Figure out what’s actually important to you before you start your kitchen renovation to ensure the end result is your culinary dream – not someone else’s. For example, if you like whipping up extravagant dinners for all your friends, you’ll need to focus on including enough preparation room and reserve a space for a generous fridge-freezer for storing all those fresh ingredients (and leftovers). You’ll also want a state-of-the-art hob and oven so you can cook multiple dishes at once. Oh, and a top-of-the-range dishwasher to keep washing-up to a minimum. At the same time, be sure to include plenty of cabinet space in your plans to hold multiple pots and pans, and buy enough cutlery and silverware for a banquet. You see how quickly this can get out of hand? Before you know it, you’ll be right back where you started with an overloaded, cramped little kitchen – prioritising is essential.

Think outside the box

With the bigger elements of your kitchen considered, it’s time to think about the little things which can actually make the most significant difference. Think pull-out chopping boards that magically expand your bench top space, or a pull-out pantry to improve accessibility to food (very important, we’re sure you’ll agree). Also, there are clever shelving installations you can include in your kitchen design that will double your storage space.

Decorate

With a small kitchen, you will likely need to store some items on display. Don’t see this as an annoyance, but rather an opportunity to decorate your kitchen in line with your vision. To add some charm and character, your latest cookbook and favourite vase on display can do wonders. Not to mention the weekly blooms you will now want to fill your stunning kitchen with.

Follow these steps, and you’ll have a refined kitchen area that blends beautifully and is fully personalised to your needs. It’s great to dream big, but when it comes to kitchens, you can be just as creative dreaming little.
