Fitzroy Bathroom Renovation

2023 WINNER of the ‘HIA Renovated Bathroom up to $40,000’

THE CLIENT BRIEF: 

• Provide a more functional bathroom with a better-proportioned/larger shower 
• Be a feature of the home and showpiece for guests 
• Improve storage (existing bathroom had none) 
• Add a sense of fun with a pop of colour or quirk (tie it to the hipster culture associated with Fitzroy) 

Being a small Fitzroy converted warehouse, this bathroom renovation was located in a tight space at the top of the staircase on the second level.  

In the existing layout, the toilet was positioned in direct line of sight to the door. To improve the view into the room when looking in from the hallway, we relocated the toilet to the north-facing wall (to the right of the door) in a concealed model. This immediately improved the overall aesthetic and feel of the space. 

To improve the room’s functionality further, we designed the shower at the maximum size possible utilising an open format with a frameless panel so as not to divide the space. 

Despite the small footprint, we managed to incorporate smart storage solutions without compromising the overall design. Examples include the concealed cabinet above the toilet in Laminex Oyster Grey to seamlessly blend with the soft grey wall and floor tiles. Additionally, the cabinet behind the feature mirror was inset into the wall so as not to intrude on the entry of the room. 

The minimal concrete hand basin, chosen in ‘Pastel Peach’, was designed to provide the perfect pop of colour and give the “wow” on entry. 

Our finishing touch to the room was the inclusion of a moody Robert Gordon ceramic wall sconce. This was installed on the angled wall space above the toilet and concealed cabinet to add the right amount of ambient light. The colour ‘Storm’ was selected as a nod to the subtle blue-grey speckle in the shower feature mosaic. 

Our clients were ecstatic (and still are) with their new bathroom which will serve their growing family for years to come!
