A solid home built in 1870 comprising of solid brick and bluestone foundations had seen some additions over its history. The owners had completed some major extensions over the past two years but through various frustrations with building and architectural design they were still without living space, kitchen, downstairs powder room and butler’s pantry/laundry.
The brief was for the design to be minimal, timeless and clean-edged, but infused with quirkiness to suit the eclectic but grand aesthetics of the client and home.
The smarterBATHROOMS+ team was required to undertake considerable structural change and engineering to relocate the kitchen so it overlooks the backyard and faces the living areas.
Difficult to see in photographs, a patchwork of 2pac cabinetry finished in a fusion of white and soft grey and alternating in three different levels of finish: matte, 30% and 60%, mean that when you pass through the kitchen at different times of the day the light bounces subtly, emanating the playful movement of clouds.
Eclectic features of the home were retained, such as the art deco curve of the current laundry, now detailed and made a hero laid with Carrara marble penny round tiles.
A subtly textural bench-top adds depth and looks and feels like a natural linen cloth rather than the typical flatness of normal reconstituted stones. And finally the floor was laid in an engineered French Oak to withstand the rigours of a busy family life.
