The owners of this beautiful St Kilda apartment overlooking Luna Park came to us for a complete kitchen renovation. After decades of living in a big house, they were ready to downsize and enjoy the convenience of apartment living.

Being big entertainers, they wanted their new space to be versatile enough to mould to each occasion and serve as a gathering place. With a small footprint, our challenge was to deliver a functional kitchen that they could tuck away when it wasn’t in use.

Client Requirements

  • To be able to make the kitchen almost disappear when not in use
  • A more unconventional design that strayed from the traditional white kitchen
  • Sophisticated look, use of natural materials
  • To have a focal point that integrated the kitchen with the dining area.

Existing Conditions

  • A small footprint
  • Apartment block, with solid walls behind the kitchen area
  • A confined space with a tight working area.

Our clients envisioned a moody, intimate, and elegant design for their compact kitchen, so we went with a darker palette for the cabinetry and walls. The main goal was to lengthen the space and draw attention to the integrated island, which is the focal point of the room.

Our clients chose a beautiful slab of marble for the dining table, which became the hero piece of the design. With the sink and cooktop tucked away into sleek, clean cabinetry when not in use, the kitchen becomes an extension of the dining space. Being a small kitchen, we integrated the pantry and installed pull-out mechanisms so all the height and width of the kitchen was maximised for storage.

For the finishing touches, we chose brass as the perfect companion to the beautiful natural stone in the centre.
