A Kitchen for under $25,000 in a brick veneer home in Melbourne’s East – 10 hot tips

1: Spend time on the design

We are all creatures of habit, and lets face it the kitchen has been fine for the last 15 years right. Wrong. Now if the time to seek and expert and get some serious design help. You will be amazed at how a clever designer can transform your life.

2: Laminate is the new 2 pack

A while ago two pack was all the rage but recently there has been a resurgence towards the old staple. Laminate. The finish you can achieve with modern laminates is great, hard wearing and looks sensational. Get your kitchen designer to run you through the options available.

3: Stone tops

Engineered stone, or “Ceasarstone” as it has become known as is worth its weight in gold. Chip and stain resistant, it does make for a hard wearing, bulletproof countertop, that even the clumsiest chef struggles to remove the “just out of the box” look from.

4: Just do the doors?

We usually recommend against this. Doing this you are keeping all the cheap bits of the kitchen and renewing all the expensive stuff. Unless the layout is perfect, has many drawers and the internals of the cabinets are perfect. Renovating the kitchen is the perfect time to really thing about the storage requirements, design and workflow. Kitchens can be so much easier to use if there is some design thought put into them.

5: Soft close

Consider soft close drawers and doors. They are soooo nice, and not much more expensive than the slam variety.

6: Lighting

Some over bench task lighting can be incorporated for that wow factor, and to make using the kitchen that much easier

7: Get a bigger fridge

We are moving towards more cold storage, and fresh foods. Renovating the kitchen is a good time to rethink your fridge size. Maybe even get an icemaker and chilled water point.

8: Use drawers

Drawers are a much more efficient way to store items. As we get older, it becomes more difficult to get into the back of cabinetry

9: Connect the sink early

Make sure your installer allows to connect the sink before the stone top goes in, and to remove and refit it after the stone is installed. This will mean as soon as you will have a working sink 1-2 weeks earlier. For the sake of a few dollars your life is so much easier.

10: Choose a reputable full service company to manage you renovation.

Choose a company who can handle the design, manufacture and install of cabinetry, and also all the stone counter tops, splashback and appliances. This way it will all fit together well, be managed efficiently and also there will be no finger pointing if the whole thing does not fit together seamlessly.
