An Interior Designer’s perspective with our very own Tintin Christina.
Designing a beautiful bathroom or kitchen doesn’t have to mean spending without limits. While it’s easy to be drawn to every premium finish and feature, a well-designed space is less about how much you spend and more about where you invest it.
The key is to choose your hero elements, that’s the features that will define the space, and allow the rest to support them. Much like a well-styled outfit, not everything needs to be designer for the overall result to feel considered and refined. With a thoughtful approach, you can achieve a high-end outcome while staying within your budget.
Custom Vanity
A custom vanity ensures the proportions suit your space perfectly, particularly in smaller or awkward layouts. It also allows for better-quality joinery, hardware, and storage solutions that will stand the test of time.
Heating
Comfort should never be overlooked. In climates like Melbourne, adequate heating—whether through heated towel rails, underfloor heating, or efficient heat lamps can significantly improve daily use and overall enjoyment of the space.
Feature Tiles
If there’s one place to make a visual statement, it’s here. Feature tiles bring personality and depth, becoming a focal point that elevates the entire bathroom.
Lighting
Bathrooms are highly functional spaces. Layered lighting, combining task and ambient lighting, enhances usability while also creating a softer, more inviting atmosphere when needed. Mirrored lighting is also a gorgeous feature.
Mirrored Cabinetry
A mirrored cabinet offers valuable storage without compromising space. It keeps benchtops clutter-free and, when designed well, can include integrated powerpoints for added functionality.
Protective Finishes
Products like Enduro Shield are worth considering for busy households. They help reduce cleaning time and maintain the appearance of glass and tiles over time.
Main Wall & Floor Tiles
You don’t need oversized tiles to achieve a premium look. Mid-size formats (such as 600 x 600) strike a balance between aesthetics and cost efficiency, particularly when factoring in labour. Let your feature tiles take centre stage and keep the remaining selections simple and cohesive.
Tapware & Accessories
Quality is essential, but that doesn’t mean chasing high-end imported finishes. Opt for reliable, well-designed tapware with universal in-wall systems, such as Phoenix tapware or MIXX tapware which allow for easier updates in the future.
Vanity Benchtop
Durability should guide your choice here. Stone options like Caesarstone or Corian offer excellent performance without the maintenance concerns or cost of natural stone.
Shower Screen
Keep it simple. A standard frameless or semi-frameless glass screen without complex custom cuts will achieve a clean, modern look without unnecessary expense.
Basins & Baths
These elements don’t need to be overly expensive to perform well. Most quality porcelain options are durable, easy to clean, and visually refined. Similarly, choosing a lighter bath can reduce both purchase and installation costs.
Custom Cabinetry & Storage Solutions
The kitchen is one of the most used spaces in the home, and functionality is everything. Custom cabinetry allows you to maximise storage and tailor the layout to your lifestyle. Investing in internal accessories such as pull-out bins, pantry systems, and deep drawers will significantly improve usability.
Appliances
Focus your budget on the appliances you use most frequently. A reliable dishwasher and an effective rangehood will enhance everyday living far more than purely aesthetic upgrades.
Sink
The sink is one of the hardest-working elements in the kitchen. A durable, high-quality sink will better withstand daily wear and maintain its appearance over time.
Benchtop
Often the visual anchor of the kitchen, particularly in island designs, the benchtop is worth investing in. A well-chosen surface can elevate the entire space and tie the design together.

Tapware & Accessories
As with bathrooms, prioritise quality and practicality over brand prestige or specialty finishes.
Cabinet Finishes
Modern laminates have evolved significantly and now offer a wide range of textures and colours. They are often more durable than painted finishes like 2-Pac, making them a smart and cost-effective choice especially for high-traffic kitchens.
Full Height Cabinetry
Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry can look impressive, but it’s not always necessary. In many cases, a bulkhead with a shadow line detail provides a more refined, architectural finish without the cost and avoids creating storage that’s difficult to access.
Splashback
Tiled splashbacks can be both impactful and budget-friendly. Opt for larger format tiles to keep installation costs down, and consider protective coatings like Enduro Shield to minimise grout maintenance.
Integrated Appliances
While seamless integration can look beautiful, it’s not essential. Many modern appliances are designed with clean lines and finishes that sit comfortably within a well-designed kitchen.
A successful renovation isn’t about spending, it’s about spending wisely. By identifying where design impact and daily function matter most, you can create a kitchen or bathroom that feels elevated, personal, and enduring.
When the right elements are given room to shine, the result is a space that not only looks exceptional but also works effortlessly for the way you live.
This is where the guidance of an interior designer becomes invaluable. Beyond aesthetics, a designer brings clarity and structure to what can otherwise feel like a series of overwhelming decisions. They help you prioritise, distilling your brief, understanding how you live, and translating that into a cohesive plan that aligns with both your vision and your budget.
An experienced designer knows where investment will genuinely add value, and where it won’t. Just as importantly, they act as a bridge between design and construction, working closely with the build team to ensure what is drawn, selected, and specified is both achievable and delivered as intended.
There’s also a level of foresight that only comes with experience. Ultimately, working with an interior designer isn’t about adding cost; it’s about protecting your investment. It ensures your budget is working in the right places, your decisions are made with confidence, and the final outcome reflects both quality and intent.
