2023 FINALIST of the ‘HIA Renovated Kitchen over $80,000’
Our client wished to renovate the ground floor kitchen of their lovely Elwood brick home. While the original kitchen had plenty of storage capabilities, there were a lot of dead corners, and hence, was not particularly functional or an accessible space.
That’s Entertainment…
Our clients enjoy entertaining family and friends, and the existing kitchen was not conducive to this. With their family growing, they wanted to refresh the outdated kitchen design, opening the space into the living/dining room to create a warm and engaging environment that suited their needs.
For the design, our client wished to embrace curves, use natural timber, and incorporate soft textures to create warmth. They wanted to create a kitchen that was the heart of the home: a central area for entertaining and a space they could be proud of. They came to us with very clear ideas, having collected imagery for inspiration from Pinterest and we worked collaboratively to bring their vision to life.
Connecting Liveability…
To meet the brief of connecting the kitchen to the living space, a challenge involved removing a load-bearing wall between the two areas. This meant we needed to reinforce the subfloor and incorporate a steel beam at the ceiling. The result left us with beautifully curved plaster that marked the connection between the spaces. Another challenge was measuring the minimum radius the Porta Timber paneling would allow for the island bench. This resulted in the overall curve being larger than originally drafted, however, it was a welcomed change as it created a softer curve across the side of the bench and to tie it to the curved plaster wall, both radii ended up being the same.
Nothing left out in the cold…
To further increase opportunities for entertainment, and to create a connection between the indoors and outdoors, we added a pantry and bar area at the end of the kitchen in a space that was previously empty, reserved for a kitchen table. Our clients enjoy collecting wine and dried meats (salami, etc.) which is why we made inclusions for an additional wine fridge in that area. Adding this to the overall kitchen area, made for more efficient use of space.
