Elwood
Studio Kitchen
4 weeks
Our Elwood studio kitchen needed to be compact and ensure our client as well as regular overseas visitors could subsist in the environment for weeks at a time. Our client wanted to achieve a fun space that recalled the nostalgia of his youth spent sea side in New Zealand. The Kiwi name “bach” is short for bachelor, and is a place where males hid away during summer months often living rough for weeks on end. These “Baches” were fabricated from found or available objects, and function was the winner over form.
This nautical meets ‘bach’ theme soon became the direction that would makes up the space, found objects and boat parts form the backbone of the kitchen. Boat cleats are utilised as handles, distressed wood from old packing cases fashioned into doors and ropes from a disused rotten dinghy open the cabinetry. The remainder of the cabinetry is cut from used form-ply and an old art table forms the benchtop. The client spent lazy summers in an areas settled by shipbuilders from Novia Scotia. One of the doors imitates the shipping crate on this voyage with passenger names, destination and the ship by which they arrived.
Everything about this space speaks true to the clients unique theme, along with everything packed in the small space, allowing the kitchen to function for weeks on end.
