Kitchen, pantry + laundry

Duration

12 weeks

There was once a structural rear wall forming a barrier between the original kitchen and the casual dining area separating an extension from the original Victorian terrace. The client required the kitchen and dining to become unified while including a laundry solution, butler’s pantry as well as an area for our clients children to get creative that would be used as a space for them to study in the future. This space in particular needed to be a durable and functional working areas in order to deal with the traffic and clutter of day-to-day life. With the challenge of working around structural implications, it was imperative to improve the privacy, access, light and flow of the lower rear section of the home, a problem for many terrace row homes. Our design and build teams had their work cut out for them to come up with the perfect solution to tick all of the boxes for our clients.

The first step was to remove the restrictive elements such as the side window, dividing walls and fireplace to create the much desired open space. The decision was made to approach this area of the home with a clean, light, streamlined and more contemporary aesthetics than that of the rest of the home. This meant that skirting boards, architraves, cornices and ceiling details were all minimised. Structural elements were strategically concealed within cabinetry and lowered ceiling lines. The inclusion of a splashback window and  rear sliding door in turn addressed natural lighting, access and privacy issues as well as the ability to to over look the backyard and future pool. The considerable structural changes required clever, economical solutions and finishes to keep the project on budget. Pantry and laundry areas are readily serviced off the kitchen, also providing rear access, and a row of tall cabinetry conceals additional storage and the children’s study nook, meaning this area is effortlessly tidied when closed behind pocket doors.

An impressive island bench takes pride of place running through the middle of the room with a lowered, offset dining table in a contrasting timber laminate finish provides a welcoming congregating area within the kitchen space for the family to enjoy.

Here’s what the clients had to say: “On trend, on budget, on time and really really really nice people you would just want to welcome into your home for a project. We have just completed our 2nd exstensive kitchen renovation. The 1st project was such grand experience we didn’t even bother with consulting other companies for a quote or design consult. Smarter we love you.” – Russell & Michelle

An in-depth understanding of our client’s family, their aspirations and requirements have allowed our design and build teams to work seamlessly to transform the kitchen and adjoining areas. Our clients now enjoy an expansive, open, family friendly area with stunning yet practical design choices that will see them long into the future.
