Murrumbeena Home – Kitchen

This open industrial space has come along way from the boxed in solid kitchen and laundry it once was. The space has faced a total transformation to bring the kitchen back to life, including the removal of a structural brick wall separating the existing kitchen and laundry area and combining the two into one harmonious space.

Unlike its predecessor, it was imperative to the client that both form and function were to play an equal role in the conversion of this space, with an industrial inspired look. The approach was to create a feeling of spaciousness using materials that would create interest and encourage conversation. The space has been heavily influenced by a handcrafted slab of Marri timber that the client had carefully sourced from Western Australia.  Selected for its imperfections, complete with exposed raw edges and patina that will in time form. The decision to remove part of the wall render to expose the 70 year old brick work heightens the industrial aesthetic of the kitchen, as well as pays homage to the original build of the home.

The redesign of this space has drastically changed how this family now use their kitchen. The end result is one that tells a story, evokes thought and interest and above all is a space that the whole family love to be in together!
