Port Melbourne Bathroom Renovation

Our client approached us to renovate the bathroom in their 2-bedroom apartment in the heart of Port Melbourne. The original bathroom did not lend itself to feelings of respite and tranquility and was in desperate need of a facelift.  

THE INSPIRED BRIEF 

We began the project with the client’s dream vanity already decided, and we used this as the central point on which to leverage our design. Other design requirements included a walk-in shower, hidden laundry storage and, most importantly, a handheld shower to water their plants and bathe their future dog! 

THE DESIGN 

Given the project was in an apartment complex, the design needed to accommodate the unit’s plumbing which sat above the floor. This is in contrast to houses where plumbing typically sits within the building’s foundations (i.e. below the floor) allowing for easy walk-in showers that are level with the bathroom floor.  

To make this accomodation, we raised the shower, creating a step, and designed a shelf beneath the vanity to hide any visible pipes.  The result presented a great solution as the shelf created additional feature storage for laundry baskets or other bulky items. The increased height of the shower also meant the beautiful herringbone tiles ran seamlessly up from the floor (in the original plans, the tiles were horizontal). 

Brushed nickel tapware was selected throughout, and the vanity taps were placed to the right (rather than the left) of the spout so the fixtures behind the wall would be clear of the cavity slider door that connected the bathroom to the master bedroom. 

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS 

The tiles were laid in a herringbone finish and ran from the floor, up the shower base, up the shower wall, specifically aligning the pattern into the shower niche. This was a feature the client was most excited about, and we wanted to ensure it was perfect. Perfection takes time, so we held a long tile set out meeting, laying tiles on the floor to show the colour variation and how the pattern would sit within the room.  

The effort made to achieve this paid off as the result beautifully highlighted the craft and professionalism of our tilers. It has become a key detail and feature that all the client’s friends notice when they visit the apartment!
