Port Melbourne Home 4 – Bathroom

This Port Melbourne renovation was a particularly special one. The home was once a biscuit factory back in 1854 with original features in tact and character oozing from the brick work. Meaning the new bathroom and ensuite designs needed to intertwine with the original features and reflect the spaces character. Exposed brick, bold beams over head and 4 meter ceilings needed to blend into the new design rather than stand out. The ensuite was the main focus of the renovation, the room needed to be a luxurious space where our client could reside. It became clear that the client brief was with a bath tub at its core to anchor the bespoke space with a nod to the biscuit factory that once was. The main bathroom was to become a paired back version of the luxurious ensuite remaining in keeping with the original industrial style of the home, almost as if it has always been there. The lighting through out the bathrooms was insufficient and high on the priority list to ensure the new lighting was in keeping with the style as well as being practical for the rooms.

Our design manager Vanessa worker harmoniously with the client to ensure that the overall vision for the home flowed through to the ensuite and bathroom spaces. A new sliding ‘barn door’ makes an immediate statement and sets the tone for what is to be revealed behind it. The inclusion of the sliding door has also provided adequate space around the lavish bath, giving it the room it demands to ensure it can be properly appreciated within the space. The bespoke hand hammered copper bath within the ensuite is the focal point of the ensuite, demanding attention yet not detracting from the many exciting and eloquent elements that make up the room. The bath is a distinct nod to the craftsmanship of the original factories time, now a dying craft. Every last detail from the textured tile selection, through to the copper accents found through out, down to the handles on the vanity unit has been meticulously selected to effortlessly tie the ensuite together.

The inability to pin point a design era gives the bathroom space the paired back style that the client was looking for. This room being for guests of the house allows those lucky enough to reside in it, to relax within the space with ample storage to make it their own. A generous shower and vast natural light filled ceiling, gives the small bathroom a sense of grandeur. The lighting issue has been combated with the inclusion of large‚‘industrial‘ pendant lighting installing from exposed ceiling hangers, with a touch of copper to tie the subtle colour scheme through to every last detail. In conjunction with task lighting situated above the vanity units, the lighting within the spaces is just as much beautiful as it is practical.

The overall result is a homage to an industrial age of yesteryear, the finishes blend harmoniously with the 1850 features of the building, creating breathtaking spaces for our client and guest alike to bask in.
